In a November 2020 article, National Product Insider reported data collected by Euromonitor International concerning the rising consumption of mental clarity supplements. They report the following survey results.

Memory Issues: Sixty percent of respondents under age 45 say they have memory issues causing a moderate to severe impact on their current health and feelings of well-being. While only fifty-seven percent of those over age 60 said were having that same level of memory issues.

Employment Pressures: Forty-five percent of respondents between age 20-39 feel constant pressure to perform and produce at work while feeling a lower sense of job security.

Daily Stress: Innova Market Insights reports ninety percent of consumers claim they experience stress at least a few times a month while seventy-five percent say their average week is “very busy” or “pretty busy.”

Consumer Trends in Dietary Supplements for Brain Health

The number of supplements carrying a health claim of mental acuity rose at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of twenty-six percent from 2015-2019 according to Innova Market Insights. These supplements include those that boost mood, reduce stress, and or help with sleep and relaxation. Innova Market Insights says consumers are turning to nootropics and adaptogens botanicals to combat memory issues and daily stress. Nootropics are any drug or supplement meant to improve cognitive function, memory, and creativity. Adaptogens include herbs to promote the healthy physical and chemical processes of normal life.

Known Nootropics that Boost Cognitive Functioning

Bacopa Monnieri

Bacopa Monnieri, a perennial water hyssop native to India and Australia, has been used for hundreds of years in Indian Ayurveda medicine. It is both a Nootropic and adaptogen.

As a nootropic, bacopa monnieri appears to effectively and reliably help improve memory across all adult age categories and situations though it takes four-six weeks to take effect. Animal studies show bacopa monnieri may protect against normal age-related neurodegeneration without developing tolerance or toxicity issues. The only noted side-effect is mild digestive issues.

As an adaptogen, bacopa monnieri may help improve cognitive functioning by modulating anxiety and depression.

Reishi Mushrooms

This fungus grows in hot, humid areas in Asia and is traditionally used in Chinese medicine for its immune-boosting properties. Its ability to help fight depression and fatigue could make it a viable nootropic. However, possible side-effects of reishi mushroom supplementation in powder form include liver damage.

Ashwagandha

Ayurveda medicine uses the root extract of ashwagandha to aid in reducing stress. A daily dose of 300 mg over sixty days has been clinically shown to help reduce the stress hormone, cortisol, in normal healthy but stressed individuals by 14-27.9%. By aiding anxiety reduction, cognitive functioning, computing, and memory all improve.

Ginkgo Biloba

Used for thousands of years in Chinese medicine, ginkgo biloba extract EGb 761 has been widely studied for its cognitive enhancement and regeneration of brain cells. A 24-week trial using 240 mg of EGb 761 shows it may improve neuropsychiatric symptoms and cognitive functioning of those suffering from dementia. A six-week study found it may help increase processing speed and memory recall for older adults taking 180 mg of EGb 761.

Phosphatidylserine

As a fatty substance, phosphatidylserine helps coat and protect brain cells while increasing neurotransmission. A two-week supplementation of 400 mg daily of phosphatidylserine showed a 20% increase in cognitive processing speed and improved processing accuracy in a double-blind crossover study.

Omega-3 Fatty Acids or Fish Oil Supplements

Two of the dominant omega-3 fatty acids, eicosatetraenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), are commonly known as fish oils because they are naturally abundant in fish and for their importance in various biological processes including brain functioning and inflammatory response.

Studies have shown EPA and DHA are necessary for proper brain, eye, and immune development in the womb. There are also promising benefits of EPA and DHA supplementation in preventive medicine for adults including weight management and cognitive functioning for those suffering mild symptoms of Alzheimer's disease.

EPA may notably help improve major depression symptoms by reducing inflammation in the brain.

In a study involving 26 children, a supplementation of 750 mg of EPA and 300 mg DHA was shown to help improve attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder. A study of medical students dealing with anxiety showed twenty percent improvement of anxiety symptoms with supplemental fish oil at 2.5 grams of omega-3. High levels of DHA may help improve verbal recognition memory in healthy elderly adults. A six-month trial of healthy young adults saw possible improvements in working memory with a supplement of 930 mg EPA and 750 mg DHA.
