Are you feeling sluggish, like your body's working overtime? Are you so busy, you don’t eat a nutritious diet with a large variety of foods? Maybe you don’t like vegetables? Or animal-based foods?

Consult with your doctor. You may benefit from taking a dietary supplement to fill your nutrition gaps.

The advantages of responsibly using dietary supplements include filling nutrition gaps, helping reduce the risks of some diseases, and supporting mental and physical performance goals.

What Are Dietary Supplements?

A dietary supplement is anything (capsule, tablet, powder, drink, gummy, etc.) taken orally to supplement the diet. In basic terms, supplements supplement the diet. They are not meant to be taken in place of consuming a regular, nutritious diet.

Benefits of Taking a Dietary Supplement

The global dietary supplement market is flourishing. Why are so many people taking supplements? As nutrition awareness and discretionary income increase, people buy and use supplements for one of these four reasons.

1 – Fill nutrition gaps. For optimal functioning, the body needs a daily set amount of essential (macro and micro) nutrients. If someone does not have a varied diet or makes poor diet choices, taking a supplement can help fill nutrition gaps.

2 – May help reduce the risk of certain diseases. Based on the type of disease, some supplements may support or aid the body in reducing the risk of the disease or help reduce the symptoms of the disease. For example:

  • Vitamin B9 or Folic Acid used preconception may decrease the risk of some birth defects. Folic acid is involved in the development of the fetal and infant brain. However, having the right folic acid 1balance is important as both too little and too much can cause developmental problems.
  • Vitamin D and Calcium keep bones strong and reduce the risks of bone loss.
  • Omega-3 Fatty Acids may help some individuals with heart disease.
  • Vitamin D, Vitamin C, Zinc, and Probiotics may support the immune system to fight off infections or reduce adverse effects from respiratory illnesses.

3- May help support improvements in performance or recovery. Sports nutrition supplements are designed to bolster the body for performance and deliver protein (essential amino acids) to aid the body in building, repairing, and rejuvenating muscle mass. Mental clarity supplements may aid relaxation to reduce stress and thereby improve working memory and cognition.

4- Provide required nutrients not readily available in vegan or vegetarian diets. Vitamin B2, B12, calcium, and iron are necessary for optimal functioning. These nutrients are readily available in animal-based foods but not in plant-based foods.

Warnings for Using Dietary Supplements

By law, dietary supplements cannot claim to treat, diagnose, prevent, or cure any disease. Consumers should be wary of any supplement product that makes these types of claims or promises to be a wonder drug.

Complex and ongoing chemical reactions drive the body. Ingesting combinations of dietary supplements, supplements in high doses, or supplements with over-the-counter or prescription medication can cause adverse health effects or even life-threatening situations. Always consult your healthcare provider or medical doctor before taking dietary supplements.
